There are about 91,600 words in a typical book of non-fiction, spread over 14 chapters. That is the median of 46 measured bestsellers; the middle half run 72,102 to 125,807 words. Genre sets the range: of the four genres below, business books run tightest, at 72,000 to 82,000 words, and memoirs longest, at a median of 99,578.
Book word count by genre, from The Anatomy of a Bestseller (47 books; 46 measured, the Bhagavad-gita being unscoreable). Word counts are whole manuscripts, front and back matter included.

How many words in a typical book?
The typical book word count in non-fiction is 91,574, the median of 46 measured bestsellers, and half of them fall between 72,102 and 125,807 words. That median is the fairest answer to how many words are in an average book: a plain average number of words in a book would sit higher, because a few long histories pull it up.
Genre moves the answer more than any rule of thumb. Business books cluster tightest: their middle half runs 71,932 to 82,309 words, the narrowest band in the study. Spirituality spreads widest of the four genres in the table, from 60,110 to 102,142. Self-help sits higher, at a median of 97,077, and memoir highest, at 99,578. For memoir's own bands and the 125,000-word question, see memoir word count.
The measured books run longer than most online answers to how many words in a book. Reedsy's guide, posted in September 2024, says "Nonfiction books typically range from 50,000 to 80,000 words" and cites no data for it. Of the 46 measured bestsellers, 31 run past 80,000 words, 10 sit inside that range and 5 fall below it. Most length advice is written for novelists, and non-fiction gets a single line.
Word count for books outside those four genres runs higher still. The histories reach 270,000 words: The Silk Roads has 270,756 and A People's History of the United States 296,927. Sapiens, the shortest of the three, still runs 141,256. Health and science titles run long too, with How Not to Die at 226,871 words and Why We Sleep at 126,684.
So the number of words a book should have depends first on its genre. A 75,000-word business book is in the middle of its field; the same length would put a self-help book in the shortest quarter.
How many chapters should a book have?
Fourteen is the median across 46 measured bestsellers, and the middle half have 11 to 22 chapters. Genre shifts the count a little: self-help books have 11 at the median, business books and memoirs 13, spirituality titles 16. The number of chapters a book will usually have follows from how long each chapter runs.
The extremes show how loose the count is. When Breath Becomes Air has 3 chapters and The Glass Castle 5, while Autobiography of a Yogi has 49 and The Purpose Driven Life 48. A count outside 11 to 22 is common and harmless if each chapter holds one idea. If you have far more, check whether some chapters are halves of one idea; if far fewer, check whether one chapter carries two.
Chapter length is the better guide. Across all 633 chapters in the study, the median runs 4,489 words, about 19 minutes of reading. Measured book by book instead, the typical book's median chapter runs 5,734 words. How many words in a chapter breaks both down by genre and says when to split one.
Is 50,000 words a book?
Yes, if the idea is complete. Five of the 46 measured bestsellers run under 50,000 words, and The Miracle of Mindfulness does its work in 30,388. The study sets two flags: under 50,000 words, check that the idea is complete; over 130,000, unless the book is a history, assume it needs a structural edit.
The five short bestsellers are The Miracle of Mindfulness (30,388 words), Zero to One (42,988), When Breath Becomes Air (45,486), When Things Fall Apart (47,015) and Reclaim Your Heart (49,220).
At the long end, 11 of the 46 run past 130,000 words, and three of those are histories. The other eight include Thinking, Fast and Slow (190,427) and The Intelligent Investor (204,371). These totals count front and back matter, so endnotes and appendices are inside them.
How many pages is that?
A typical 91,574-word book fills about 235 to 254 pages of text at 6 × 9 inches, a common trade paperback size, and 277 to 305 pages at 5.5 × 8.5. These are estimates from Gatekeeper Press, a publishing services company, which puts 360 to 390 words on a 6 × 9 page set in 11.5-point type.
| Words | 5 × 8 in (240–260 words a page) | 5.5 × 8.5 in (300–330) | 6 × 9 in (360–390) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60,000 | 231–250 pages | 182–200 pages | 154–167 pages |
| 80,000 | 308–333 pages | 242–267 pages | 205–222 pages |
| 91,574 (median bestseller) | 352–382 pages | 277–305 pages | 235–254 pages |
| 100,000 | 385–417 pages | 303–333 pages | 256–278 pages |
Pages are words divided by Gatekeeper's words-per-page range, rounded. For example, 80,000 words at 330 words a page is 242 pages; at 300 words a page it is 267. They count running text only; front matter and chapter openings add more. Gatekeeper's own page says the final count depends on trim size, word count, font, margins and spacing. The word count to pages calculator runs the sum for your trim and type.
Page count matters because it sets the print cost. KDP prices a paperback's printing as "Fixed cost + (page count * per page cost)", per its help page as of October 2026. On Amazon.com, a black-ink paperback at a regular trim such as 6 × 9 costs a flat $2.30 for 24 to 110 pages. From 110 to 828 pages it costs $1.00 plus $0.012 a page, and KDP's own example puts a 300-page book at $4.60. At that rate each extra 100 pages adds $1.20, and the typical book's 235 to 254 pages cost about $3.82 to $4.05 a copy. What it costs to publish a book works through the rest, route by route.
How many words should a book be?
Start from your genre's middle half, then let the idea decide where in it you land. For trade non-fiction that means 72,000 to 82,000 words for business, 81,000 to 120,000 for self-help, 88,000 to 112,000 for memoir and 60,000 to 102,000 for spirituality.
By purpose:
- A short guide or lead magnet. The study has no band for these. Its shortest bestseller runs 30,388 words, so a short book works if it is complete.
- Business, self-help or spirituality. Aim for the middle half of your genre, above. Below it, check the idea is finished; above it, check every chapter earns its place.
- Memoir. The five measured memoirs run 45,486 to 157,026 words, with the middle three between 88,000 and 112,000. Let the story's arc set the length.
- History, health or science. These run longest: the seven measured titles range from 94,686 words (Breath) to 296,927.
Length is one measure. The study also tracks chapter length and reading level, and you can test a passage of your own with the readability checker.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure on this page comes from the study, published by Manuscript AI Research in October 2026. It measured 47 long-running bestsellers and classics in six genres, from Marcus Aurelius's Meditations to Atomic Habits. Forty-six were measured; the Bhagavad-gita edition's transliterated Sanskrit cannot be scored.
The genres are spirituality (17 books), self-help (9), business (9), memoir (5), health and science (4) and history and ideas (3). Spirituality and memoir are over-weighted on purpose: they are the genres Manuscript AI's authors write in most.
Book word counts are whole manuscripts, front and back matter included. Chapter counts are the chapter units in the study's appendix. For chapter length, the study matched each contents page to its body text and removed forewords, prefaces, appendices, notes and indexes. That left 656 body chapters, and the length figures use the 633 of at least 800 words.
Every book in the sample succeeded, so the numbers describe where successful books sit, not what made them sell. With five memoirs, four health titles and three histories, those genre figures are descriptive. The books were written between about AD 170 and 2020, several are translations, and the study set out to measure non-fiction, so it says nothing about novels or about this year's debuts. The full method is in The Anatomy of a Bestseller, and is my book ready to publish? turns the same numbers into a ten-point checklist.
FAQ
How many words is an average book?
A non-fiction bestseller has 91,574 words at the median, and the middle half run 72,102 to 125,807. For non-fiction, read the average book word count as that median, since a few long books skew a simple mean. The study measured non-fiction only, so it has no figure for novels.
How many words should a non-fiction book be?
Aim for the middle half of your genre: 72,000 to 82,000 words for business, 81,000 to 120,000 for self-help, 88,000 to 112,000 for memoir and 60,000 to 102,000 for spirituality. Under 50,000, check that the idea is complete. Over 130,000, unless you are writing a history, plan for a structural edit.
How many chapters does a book usually have?
Fourteen, at the median of the 46 measured bestsellers, with the middle half between 11 and 22. Self-help books have the fewest at the median (11) and spirituality titles the most (16). The count follows from chapter length, which the chapter guide covers.
Is 50,000 words enough for a book?
Yes, if the idea is complete. Five of the 46 bestsellers run under 50,000 words, from The Miracle of Mindfulness at 30,388 to Reclaim Your Heart at 49,220. At 6 × 9 inches, a 50,000-word book fills about 128 to 139 pages of text.
How many pages is 80,000 words?
About 205 to 222 pages at 6 × 9 inches, 242 to 267 at 5.5 × 8.5, and 308 to 333 at 5 × 8. Those are estimates from Gatekeeper Press's words-per-page figures for 11.5-point type; your font, spacing and margins will move them. The word count to pages calculator runs the sum for your own trim size.
