Across all 633 chapters in 46 measured bestsellers, the median is 4,489 words a chapter, about 19 minutes at 238 words a minute. Book by book, the typical book's median chapter runs longer, 5,734 words, with the middle half of books at 4,367 to 6,697. Nearly two-thirds of all chapters, 64%, run 2,000 to 8,000 words.

How many words should a chapter be?
About one sitting: 3,000 to 7,000 words is the range the study recommends. Across all 633 bestseller chapters, the median runs 4,489 words, or 19 minutes of reading. Taken book by book, the typical book's median chapter is 5,734 words. Self-help runs longest, at a median of 6,724 words per chapter in a book, and spirituality shortest, at 4,520.
The two medians answer different questions. Pooling all 633 chapters counts every chapter once, so books with many short chapters weigh more. Taking each book's median first counts every book once. Use 4,489 for "how many words are in a chapter" across bestsellers, and 5,734 for "how many words per chapter in a book" taken book by book.
The words a chapter will usually have depend on genre. Self-help chapters run close to half an hour each; the study's self-help playbook says that works only because every chapter follows a pattern the reader learns quickly. Spirituality has the widest spread, with its middle half of books at 1,785 to 6,098 words per chapter. At the short end, 16 of the 22 chapters in When Things Fall Apart's sample report run under 2,000 words.
The distribution below counts the 633 body chapters of at least 800 words, with front and back matter removed.

| 15,000 and over | 23 | 4% | over 63 minutes | No |
The six bands from 2,000 to 8,000 words hold 408 of the 633 chapters. Shares are rounded; reading times use the study's 238 words a minute, the adult silent-reading average from a 2019 review by Marc Brysbaert.
How many pages should a chapter be?
A 4,489-word chapter, the median across all 633, fills about 12 pages of text at 6 × 9 inches and 14 to 15 at 5.5 × 8.5. The typical book's 5,734-word median chapter fills about 15 to 16 pages at 6 × 9. These are estimates from Gatekeeper Press's words-per-page figures for 11.5-point type.
| Chapter | Reading time | 5 × 8 in (240–260 words a page) | 5.5 × 8.5 in (300–330) | 6 × 9 in (360–390) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3,000 words | 13 minutes | 12–13 pages | 9–10 pages | 8 pages |
| 5,000 words | 21 minutes | 19–21 pages | 15–17 pages | 13–14 pages |
| 7,000 words | 29 minutes | 27–29 pages | 21–23 pages | 18–19 pages |
Pages are words divided by Gatekeeper's range, rounded, and count running text only; chapter openings and part pages add more. Pages are a weak guide on their own: the same 4,489 words fill 12 pages at 6 × 9 and 17 to 19 at 5 × 8. Reading time stays the same in every format, and the study sizes chapters by it. The word count to pages calculator runs the sum for your own trim size.
Chapter length varies; chapter shape does not
Within one book, chapters vary by about a third of their average: the study's median coefficient of variation is 0.35. Good to Great's chapters run from about 4,200 to 8,200 words. What the best books keep constant is a chapter's internal shape, how it opens and how it closes, not its word count.
"Keep your chapters the same length" is one of six pieces of writing advice the study tested and found its data does not support. As the study puts it, readers do not count words. They notice a chapter that runs past one sitting, or one that never delivers what it opened with.
The shape that holds steady is described in the study's shape section and its section on structure. Half of the bestsellers, 23 of 46, open their first chapter on a scene or story. In 17 of 47 reviews, the verdict on chapter structure was some version of "opens strongly, closes unevenly". So if your chapters differ in length, leave them. Check instead that each one opens on a moment and returns to it at the end.
How long should an introduction be?
Shorter than a body chapter. In six bestsellers whose public sample reports have clean chapter data, the introduction ran 16% to 70% of the book's median chapter, from 750 words in Predictably Irrational to 4,964 in Quiet. None was as long as its book's median chapter.
| Book | Introduction | Median of the other chapters | Introduction as a share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Predictably Irrational | 750 words | 4,677 (12 chapters) | 16% |
| The Power of Now | 2,225 words | 5,128 (10 chapters) | 43% |
| The Lean Startup | 2,735 words | 4,846 (12 chapters) | 56% |
| Deep Work | 3,979 words | 6,270 (7 chapters) | 63% |
| Breath | 3,128 words | 4,756 (10 chapters) | 66% |
| Quiet | 4,964 words | 7,134 (11 chapters) | 70% |
The counts are each sample report's approximate per-chapter word counts, read on 18 October 2026. The median of the other chapters leaves out the introduction and any conclusion or epilogue. Several other reports split chapters unevenly, so they are not used here.
Length is not what makes an introduction work. Both ends of the table state the book's central claim, according to their reports' chapter summaries. Predictably Irrational does it in 750 words. Quiet takes 4,964, because it also defines its terms and sets up the chapters that follow. Openings are also where books over-run: in the study, 72% of first chapters drew a note to tighten, against 46% of middle chapters.
How many chapters should a book have?
Fourteen at the median across 46 measured bestsellers, with the middle half at 11 to 22. Self-help books have 11, business books and memoirs 13 and spirituality titles 16. Divide your draft by your chapter length rather than picking a count first: 70,000 words in 5,000-word chapters makes 14. The full answer, by genre, is on the book-length guide.
When to split or merge a chapter
Split a chapter that needs more than 40 minutes to read, about 9,500 words at 238 words a minute; the 40 minutes is the study's own rule. Merge or cut a chapter only when it has no idea of its own. Shortness alone is not a reason: 114 of the 633 bestseller chapters run under 2,000 words.
Long chapters are about as common as short ones: 111 of the 633 run past 8,000 words, and 23 past 15,000. The study's comment on the long tail: a 15,000-word chapter asks for an hour, "and readers rarely give a single chapter that."
The one-idea test decides the rest. If you can state what a chapter adds in one sentence, it stands, whatever its length. If you need two sentences joined by "and", it may be two chapters. If its sentence repeats the chapter before, merge them.
The self-editing checklist runs these tests as its chapter pass. Memoir chapters run 5,992 words at the median book, and the memoir guide covers how memoirs break a life into chapters.
FAQ
How many words does a chapter usually have?
Across 633 chapters in 46 bestsellers, the median runs 4,489 words. Book by book, the typical book's median chapter is 5,734 words. Both figures sit inside the 3,000 to 7,000 words the study recommends for one sitting.
How many words should a chapter have, at the least?
No set number: of the 633 bestseller chapters, 114 run under 2,000 words, and 25 of the 32 body chapters in Mere Christianity's sample report run under 2,000. A short chapter is a problem only when it is a fragment of a longer idea.
How many pages should be in a chapter of 5,000 words?
About 13 to 14 pages of text at 6 × 9 inches, 15 to 17 at 5.5 × 8.5, and 19 to 21 at 5 × 8. Those are estimates from Gatekeeper Press's words-per-page figures for 11.5-point type. At 238 words a minute, the chapter takes about 21 minutes to read.
How many chapters does a non-fiction book have?
Fourteen at the median of 46 measured bestsellers, with the middle half between 11 and 22. Self-help books have the fewest at the median (11) and spirituality titles the most (16).
How many words should an introduction be?
Fewer than your typical chapter. In six bestsellers with clean sample-report data, introductions ran 750 to 4,964 words, 16% to 70% of each book's median chapter. Set yours against your own median chapter rather than a fixed number.
