The answer to how to write a good memoir is one question, told through scenes instead of a life in order. The five bestselling memoirs in our study run a median of 99,578 words in 13 chapters, three of them open on a scene, and they read as easily as any genre we measured (Flesch 65, level with spirituality).
| What | Figure (median of the five) | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Book length | 99,578 words (middle half 87,807–112,060) | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
| Chapters | 13 (middle half 5–18) | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
| Median chapter length | 5,992 words (4,470–7,469) | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
| Flesch Reading Ease | 65.0 (62.1–80.2), grade 8.3 | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
| First-person words per 1,000 | 45.3 (all 46 books: 11.5) | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
| Quotation marks per 1,000 words | 15.4, the most dialogue of any genre (all 46 books: 8.7) | The Anatomy of a Bestseller | 16 October 2026 |
Every figure here comes from the five memoirs in The Anatomy of a Bestseller (47 books; 46 measured, the Bhagavad-gita being unscoreable): When Breath Becomes Air, The Glass Castle, Born a Crime, Autobiography of a Yogi and Augustine's Confessions. Five is a small sample: the "middle half" is the second and fourth book on each measure, so each range is two real books.
Memoir, autobiography or life story: which are you writing?
Write a memoir if your story answers one question, an autobiography if readers want your whole life in order, and a family life story if your readers are your relatives. The choice sets the length, the shape and how you publish. All five books in the study work as memoirs, even the two that span decades, because each follows one question.
The first step in how to write a memoir about your life is to pick one thread of it. The Glass Castle opens with Jeannette Walls in a taxi, watching her mother pick through a Dumpster, and the rest of the book answers how she got from her parents' world to Park Avenue. When Breath Becomes Air follows Paul Kalanithi from his choice of medicine to the lung cancer that killed him.
An autobiography covers the whole life, usually in order, and its readers come for the person. Autobiography of a Yogi uses the word, but its 48 chapters follow one search, for a teacher, from childhood in India to the author's work in California.
A family life story is written for people who already know you, so it can run far shorter. If you wonder how to write a book of memoirs for your grandchildren, or the honest version of your plan is "I want to write a book about my life", start with how to write a book about your life. It has a ten-step plan from memories to draft, a chapter template and the printing options. If strangers are your readers, the rest of this page shows how to write a memoir book they finish.
How to start a memoir: examples from five bestsellers
Start a memoir on a moment: one scene, one place, one day, ideally the one that first raises the book's question. Three of the five memoirs in the study open on a scene. The two that do not are the oldest, a prayer from about AD 400 and a statement of purpose from 1946. Across all 46 books the study measured, half opened on a scene.
Here is how each of the five begins:
- The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls): the frame opens in the taxi, and the first long part begins "I WAS ON FIRE."
- When Breath Becomes Air (Paul Kalanithi): "I flipped through the CT scan images." The scans turn out to be his own.
- Born a Crime (Trevor Noah): "I was nine years old when my mother threw me out of a moving car."
- Confessions (Augustine, translated by E. B. Pusey): "Great art Thou, O Lord, and greatly to be praised." A prayer addressed to God.
- Autobiography of a Yogi (Paramahansa Yogananda): "The characteristic features of Indian culture have long been a search for ultimate verities." A thesis, which the next sentence turns into his own search.
Each of the three modern openings holds the book's question in one image: a daughter hiding from her mother, a surgeon reading his own scan, a boy thrown from a car by the parent who is saving him.
How to start writing a memoir is a different question from how to start the book. Begin drafting with the scene you remember most sharply, wherever it falls in time, and find the opening later. A test for your first page: if it could open anyone's memoir, it opens on background. Move to the first moment when something is at stake.
Memoir structure and outline
Memoir structure follows the question, and the calendar is only scaffolding. The five memoirs use three structures: chronological inside a frame (The Glass Castle, Autobiography of a Yogi), braided (Born a Crime), and a return to the opening scene (When Breath Becomes Air). Confessions runs in order for nine books, then turns to the present. They are divided into anything from 3 sections to 48 chapters.
| Book | Structure | Time span | Divisions | Median division | Opens on |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Glass Castle | Chronological inside a frame: a Dumpster in New York, then a family Thanksgiving at the end | Early childhood to adulthood in New York | 5 labeled parts | 5,992 words (parts run 799–36,473) | A scene |
| Born a Crime | Braided: each chapter opens with a short essay on apartheid, then a story | Childhood to early adulthood in South Africa | 18 chapters in 3 parts | 4,470 words | A scene |
| When Breath Becomes Air | Return to the opening: the CT scan in the prologue, Part II reopens in the hospital bed, the epilogue closes there | Youth and surgical training (Part I), illness (Part II) | Prologue, 2 parts, epilogue | No chapters | A scene |
| Confessions | Chronological for Books I–IX, then memory (X), time (XI) and Genesis (XII–XIII) | Infancy to his conversion and his mother's death | 13 books | 7,469 words | A prayer |
| Autobiography of a Yogi | Chronological, with digressions on saints, science and miracles | Childhood in India to his work in California | Preface and 48 chapters | 2,479 words | A thesis |
Figures from the study and the five Manuscript AI sample reports; "median division" is the median length of a book's chapters, parts or books as the study counted them.
Chronological inside a frame
Tell the story in order, but open on a later scene that poses the question. The Glass Castle opens in New York, goes back to the desert and Welch, West Virginia, and its review called the frame effective because it "opens with Mom in a Dumpster and closes at a family table".
Braided
Alternate two strands so each explains the other. Born a Crime sets a short essay on apartheid before each story, then lets the story show what the essay explained. Its review noted chapters that "loop forward and back in time without signposting", so give the reader a date, an age or a place at every jump.
Return to the opening
Open on the moment of crisis, go back to how you got there, and close where you began. When Breath Becomes Air does this with one hospital, from the prologue's scan to the epilogue, and its review called the structure "deliberate". It suits a memoir about one event that changed everything.
Here is how to write a memoir outline, in five lines to fill in before you plan chapters:
- The question: one sentence your last chapter answers.
- The opening scene: the moment the question first bites.
- The turns: three to five scenes where the answer changes.
- The slow stretch: where the story is most likely to sag, usually the back half, planned as scenes rather than summary.
- The closing image: a scene that answers the question, ideally in the opening's setting.
How long should a memoir be? Memoir word count
A trade memoir should run about 85,000 to 115,000 words. The five in the study have a median of 99,578 words, and the middle three run from 87,807 (Born a Crime) to 112,060 (Confessions). The shortest, When Breath Becomes Air, is 45,486 words, because its author died before finishing it. The longest, Autobiography of a Yogi, runs to 157,026.
So the word count for memoir is close to the median of all 46 books the study measured (91,574), with a narrower spread. Length should follow the arc, and the study's guidance applies: a manuscript over 130,000 words that is not a history probably needs a structural edit, the kind that moves and cuts whole chapters. For the wider picture, see how long a non-fiction book is.
Chapters vary more than books. The three memoirs with real chapters have medians from 2,479 words (Autobiography of a Yogi) to 7,469 (Confessions), and The Glass Castle's five parts run from 799 to 36,473 words. Chapter length follows the frame; how many words in a chapter has the numbers across all 46 books.
The 125,000-word question
A first-time memoirist on r/writing asked how many doors a 125,000-word memoir closes. In the study, it would be longer than four of the five memoirs and 13,000 words past Confessions, the longest of the middle three.
Advice to writers querying agents is stricter. Jane Friedman, a publishing consultant, calls 80,000 words "the industry standard for a narrative nonfiction work" and warns that a count "much higher than 100,000" may be "courting rejection" (updated February 2026). Writer's Digest's 2016 word-count guide puts memoir at 80,000–89,999 words, with 99,999 as the high end. The Steve Laube Agency, which works mostly in the Christian market, lists 40,000–70,000.
Read the study's median as what finished, edited memoirs run, and the agents' figures as what a debut is judged against at submission. At 125,000 words, cut before you query: start with the back half and with any run of episodes that make the same point.
What to write a memoir about: is your life compelling enough?
Write a memoir about one question your life has answered. What makes it readable is how you tell it: scenes, dialogue and a narrator on the page. The five memoirs use 45 first-person words per 1,000, nearly four times the 11.5 of all 46 books, and 15.4 quotation marks per 1,000, the most dialogue of any genre.
A Reddit thread asks, "Is my life actually compelling enough for a memoir?" The five books suggest the events matter less than the stakes on the page. Their chapters drew few notes about evidence (15%, against 53% for all books) and many about telling: 53% were asked to dramatize a passage instead of summarizing it, and 48% to raise the human stakes. Readers do not ask a memoir to prove anything. They ask it to show what happened and what it cost.
Three of the five give the reader no action steps at all. Meaning arrives through what the author shows and how they reflect on it.
A test for your material: write down the three memories you would tell first at a dinner table. If each one can be written as a scene, with a place, a line of dialogue and something at stake, you have a memoir. If each one comes out as a summary of hard years, write the scenes first and decide later.
Do people still read memoirs, and why do so many do poorly?
Yes, though fewer than a few years ago. US print sales of biographies, autobiographies and memoirs fell 7% in 2025 while total print sales rose 0.3%, according to Circana BookScan figures reported by Publishers Weekly. In the first half of 2025 the category had the steepest fall in adult non-fiction, 10.7%.
The category's last good year shows why so many memoirs do poorly. It grew 1.8% in 2023, and two celebrity books carried it: Prince Harry's Spare sold more than 1.2 million print copies and Britney Spears's The Woman in Me more than 908,000, Publishers Weekly reported. The biggest sellers are memoirs by people readers already know. A first-time memoirist has to sell the book on its question and its scenes alone.
In the UK, The Bookseller's review of 2025 counted memoir among the "stand-out successes" in a down year for non-fiction. BookScan counts print only, and no public figure shows how many memoirs sell fewer than a given number of copies.
The memoirs that last share habits the study can count. They open on a scene, use more dialogue than any other genre, and keep the narrator present. Four of the five reviews praised the author's humor, from Noah's comic timing to Kalanithi hiding an ice-cream sandwich in a trauma bay. Where even these five slipped, the notes point to the back half and to reflection that repeats a scene.
Memoir writing tips from the data
Five tips for writing a memoir that the numbers support: aim for Flesch 62–80; shorten words before sentences; turn summaries into scenes; plan for the back-half sag; and save reflection for the turning points. Against the median bestseller, the memoirs' shorter words are worth about 14 Flesch points and their shorter sentences about 3.
- Aim for Flesch 62–80, about grades 6 to 9. Born a Crime scores 82 and The Glass Castle 80, the two most readable books in the study. Literary and spiritual memoirs sit lower: Confessions scores 62.1 and Autobiography of a Yogi 59.1. Paste a passage into the readability checker to see where yours sits.
- Shorten words before sentences. The memoirs average 1.37 syllables per word against 1.53 for the median book, and 12.9 words per sentence against 16.0.
- Turn summaries into scenes. Nearly three memoir chapters in four (73%) drew a tightening note, most often for stacked episodes that make the same point. The review of The Glass Castle asked Walls to keep "the one or two most vivid items" and "use the saved space to dramatize a single moment".
- Find the back-half sag. All five reviews found a point where the narrative loses momentum, and in four it fell in the back half. Autobiography of a Yogi's final third "drifts into travelogue"; Confessions turns at Book X from story to philosophy.
- Reflect at the pivots, not after every scene. Walls's review praised a narrator who "rarely intrudes to editorialize" and asked for adult reflection at two or three pivotal points late in the book. Confessions was told its reflective passages "re-explain the emotion already shown".
What a manuscript report checks in a memoir
A Manuscript AI report reads the whole memoir in one run and answers eight editorial questions, among them how the chapters flow and whether each one opens and closes clearly. For every chapter it gives a summary, recommendations, the word count, reading time, Flesch score and grade level. It does not compare your book with these five or fact-check it.
In a memoir, the flow answer is where time jumps and slow stretches surface. In the Confessions sample report, it traced the thread "restlessness seeking rest" through Books I–IX and then found the break: Book X "begins by announcing a new subject". The chapter recommendations flag summary where a scene is needed and digressions that stop the story. With a Flesch score for every chapter, you can set each one against the 62–80 band yourself.
The report costs $19 and usually arrives in under 10 minutes. If you are still deciding whether the draft is finished, start with is my book ready to publish?
FAQ
How do I start writing a memoir?
Start drafting with the scene you remember most sharply, wherever it falls in time, and choose the opening later. When you do, open on a moment that raises the book's question. Three of the five bestselling memoirs in the study open on a scene, including Born a Crime's "I was nine years old when my mother threw me out of a moving car."
How many words in a memoir is typical?
The five bestselling memoirs in the study have a median of 99,578 words, and the middle three run from 87,807 to 112,060. The shortest, When Breath Becomes Air, has 45,486 words and the longest, Autobiography of a Yogi, 157,026. Aim for about 85,000 to 115,000 words for a trade memoir.
How do you write a memoir?
Answer one question through scenes, in one of three structures: chronological inside a frame (The Glass Castle), braided strands (Born a Crime), or a return to the opening scene (When Breath Becomes Air). What all three share is one question, raised at the start and answered at the end. Whichever you choose, tell the reader where they are in time at every jump.
Do people read memoirs anymore?
Yes, though US print sales of biographies, autobiographies and memoirs fell 7% in 2025, by Circana BookScan's count. The top sellers are celebrity memoirs such as Spare, which sold more than 1.2 million print copies in 2023. The five memoirs in the study open on scenes, use the most dialogue of any genre and keep the narrator on the page.
Is 125,000 words too long for a memoir?
It is long but not out of range. It is longer than four of the five memoirs in the study, and only Autobiography of a Yogi, at 157,026 words, runs longer. Past 130,000 words, assume the book needs a structural edit; below that, cut where the story slows, most often in the back half.
