How it works
Pasted text is counted in your browser and never sent anywhere.
The trim is the printed page; 6 × 9 inches is a common trade paperback. 11.5 pt is the standard the estimates assume.
Pages are your words divided by the words a page holds, at the dense and the loose end of the range.
The page range is priced at KDP’s Amazon.com black-ink paperback rates, and the royalty comes off your price.
Method and sources
Word count per page comes from Gatekeeper Press, a publishing services company. In 11.5-point type with standard margins it estimates 240–260 words a page at 5 × 8 inches, 300–330 at 5.5 × 8.5 and 360–390 at 6 × 9. The larger trims hold 450–490 at 7 × 10 and 620–680 at 8.5 × 11. Gatekeeper says the final page count for books depends on trim size, font, margins and spacing, so treat every page count here as an estimate.
The smaller and larger type sizes are our arithmetic, not Gatekeeper’s. We scale its figures by the square of 11.5 over the new size. As type grows, a line holds fewer characters and a page fewer lines. At 12.5 pt that gives 305–330 words on a 6 × 9 page.
The estimate counts running text only. The title page, contents, chapter openings and blank left-hand pages add more.
Print cost uses KDP’s Amazon.com rates for a black-ink paperback on white or cream paper, as of October 2026. A regular trim (up to 6.12 inches wide and 9 tall) costs a flat $2.30 for 24 to 110 pages. Longer books, up to 828 pages, cost $1.00 plus $0.012 a page. A large trim such as 7 × 10 or 8.5 × 11 costs $2.84 flat, then $1.00 plus $0.017 a page.
The royalty is 60% of a list price of $9.99 or more, or 50% below it, minus the print cost. Through Expanded Distribution it is 40%. The break-even price is our arithmetic: the lowest list price whose royalty is $0.00 or more. KDP’s own Printing Cost & Royalty Calculator gives the exact figure once your interior is final.
