The best AI book editors for non-fiction in 2026

By Prannay Kedia · Last checked · 11-minute read

An AI book editor works at one of two levels. Sentence-level editors such as Grammarly and ProWritingAid fix grammar and style as you write; whole-book editors such as Marlowe (fiction) and Manuscript AI (non-fiction) read the full manuscript and report on structure. The table below compares 8 tools on price, free tier, privacy and what they change.

Three pages go deeper: can ChatGPT edit a book?, can AI really edit a book? and do you have to disclose AI on KDP?. Prices below are US list prices from each company's own pages, checked 18 October 2026. We make Manuscript AI, the last row.

Best AI book editing software, compared

The best AI for editing a book depends on the edit. For grammar and sentence polish, use ProWritingAid or Grammarly. For a whole-book structural report, use Marlowe on a novel or Manuscript AI on non-fiction. For anything you can ask in a conversation, use ChatGPT or Claude. Five of the eight say they never train on your text.

Three caveats. AutoCrit, Marlowe and Sudowrite make their no-training promise in an FAQ; their privacy policies do not mention training. ProWritingAid and Grammarly show local prices outside the US, so their US prices were read from the US versions of their own pages. ChatGPT Go is left out of the table because its current US price could not be confirmed.

Which AI writing editor for which job

Pick an AI writing editor by the size of the edit. Sentence work needs a tool inside your document. Structure needs one that reads every chapter in one run. Ideas need a conversation. One verdict per job follows, and most authors end up using two tools, not one.

Grammar and typos

Use Grammarly or ProWritingAid: an AI editor that works while writing, inside your document. Grammarly checks up to 100,000 characters at a time and up to 50,000 words a day, so an 80,000-word book takes at least two days to check in full. Neither replaces a human proofread of the typeset pages. On privacy they differ: Grammarly trains on your text by default unless you switch it off, and ProWritingAid says it never does.

Line-level polish

Use ProWritingAid for its 25+ line-editing reports, or AutoCrit if you want your prose compared against a non-fiction genre such as business or memoir. For one tangled paragraph, a chatbot is quicker: ask it which sentences a reader would read twice, and do the rewriting yourself.

Whole-book structure: AI manuscript editors and developmental editing software

This is the AI book editing job that matters most for non-fiction, and the one where fiction tools stop fitting. An AI novel editor such as Marlowe, or ProWritingAid's Manuscript Analysis, maps plot, pacing and characters. For non-fiction, the questions change to argument, chapter order and what the reader does next, which is what Manuscript AI's report answers. ChatGPT Plus and Claude's paid plans hold an 80,000-word book by token count, so they can do this too if you write the questions. Our post on improving your book's structure with AI covers the common structural problems in non-fiction.

Brainstorming

Use ChatGPT or Claude for titles, subtitles, chapter names, outlines and back-cover drafts. Sudowrite does the same for fiction. Amazon counts brainstorming as AI-assisted, so it needs no disclosure on KDP, as long as you write the book.

The order to use them in

Work from the largest problem to the smallest, because polishing a sentence in a chapter you later cut wastes the effort and, later, an editor's fee.

  1. Structure and argument: chapter order, the book's main claim, chapters that repeat each other.
  2. Gaps: places where a claim runs ahead of its evidence, or a reader needs a step you skipped.
  3. Repetition and pacing: the same point made twice, a chapter that runs far longer than its neighbors.
  4. Sentences: clarity, then grammar, then a human proofread at the end.

Re-run the structural check after a big revision. The second pass shows whether the fix held and whether moving material broke something nearby.

Free AI book editors: what free gets you

An AI book editor free of charge will check a chapter, not a book. Every AI writing editor's free tier below stops well short of 80,000 words in one pass. The free versions are still worth using for the job they do.

  • ProWritingAid free runs each line-editing report twice a day on 500 words at a time. Chapter Critique and the whole-book reports are paid.
  • Grammarly free checks grammar and tone and includes 100 AI prompts a month, within the 100,000-characters-a-check limit.
  • AutoCrit free gives a few reports and one Fiction Analyzer run on up to 10,000 words.
  • Marlowe Basic is free and unlimited, but covers about six line-level areas, such as sentence statistics, clichés and repeated phrases, on a model built for fiction.
  • ChatGPT free has a 27K-token window, about 12 pages of input by OpenAI's count, and 3 file uploads a day.
  • Claude free is chat with usage limits Anthropic does not publish as a number, and up to 5 projects.
  • Sudowrite has a free trial with no card; its AI features stop when the trial ends.

Where free stops is the same for every tool: none of the free tiers reads a whole book at once, so none can tell you that Chapter 9 repeats Chapter 2.

Manuscript AI has no free tier; its sample reports are free to read, such as the one on Cal Newport's Deep Work. The closest thing to an AI book editor online, free, that reads a whole book is a chatbot fed one chapter at a time with a written summary of the rest. You supply the memory the tool lacks.

Using AI to write a book: what Amazon and readers allow

Using AI to write a book is allowed on Amazon, but the text it writes must be declared. KDP's guidelines, checked 18 October 2026, call text "created by an AI-based tool" AI-generated, even after heavy edits, and require you to say so when you publish. Editing your own words with AI needs no declaration.

So the answer to "can AI write books?" is yes: KDP does not ban them; it asks you to declare them. Three limits apply before you try:

  • Amazon caps new titles at 2 per format created, and 2 submitted, each week, according to its Create a Book help page.
  • A traditional publisher may cap AI text. The Authors Guild's April 2026 model contract clause lets authors include no more than "de minimis" or 5% AI-generated text, and asks them to disclose it.
  • Some readers now look for proof of human writing. Since 2 March 2026 any author published in the US can buy the Guild's "Human Authored" mark for $10 a title, or get it free as a member.

The Guild's mark is a useful line to know even if you never buy it: a book still counts as human-written if AI helped with research, brainstorming, outlining or spelling and grammar, but not if AI wrote the text.

For non-fiction the bigger risk is accuracy. A model that writes chapters for you can also write a plausible statistic or a study that does not exist, and the book carries your name. Do you have to disclose AI on KDP? sorts eight common cases into Amazon's two categories.

How to use an AI editor safely

Use an AI editor safely by checking three things first: whether it trains on your text, what Amazon expects you to declare, and whether the edits still sound like you. Each takes a few minutes and saves a problem you cannot undo after publication.

  1. Privacy. Read the tool's training setting before you upload; the "Trains on your text" column above links each policy. Three of the eight train by default unless you switch it off. The settings are "Product Improvement and Training" in Grammarly, "Improve the model for everyone" under Data controls in ChatGPT, and "Help Improve our AI models" under Privacy in Claude. In ChatGPT and Claude, rating an answer with a thumbs up or down can still send that conversation to training. Business plans and paid APIs do not train by default. How we keep your book safe shows what happens to a manuscript sent to our report.
  2. Disclosure. Grammar fixes and edit suggestions on your own text are AI-assisted, and Amazon does not need to hear about them. Text an AI wrote is AI-generated and must be declared.
  3. Voice. Accept edits one sentence at a time. After an AI pass, search for em dashes and stock words such as delve, and vary sentence length where every line runs the same. Can ChatGPT edit a book? covers the tells and three prompts that avoid them.

What Manuscript AI does and does not do

Manuscript AI is a whole-book editor for non-fiction only. It reads a full Word manuscript of up to 16 MB in one run and returns a report, usually in under 10 minutes and guaranteed within 2 hours. It costs $19 a manuscript, with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

In the table's terms:

  • Kind of edit: developmental feedback. The report answers eight editorial questions about the whole book, including how well the chapters flow, whether chapters open and close clearly, and whether the reader will know what to do next. Every chapter gets a summary, recommendations, a word count, reading time and two readability scores, Flesch reading ease and Flesch-Kincaid grade, calculated by formula.
  • What it does not do: it does not fact-check, line-edit, proofread or rewrite your sentences. It does not read fiction. You cannot chat with it; you add your own questions when you upload.
  • Training: never. The manuscript file is deleted within 48 hours of delivery. The analysis uses our own models plus models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google through paid APIs that bar training.

A chatbot is the better tool in four cases. You want feedback on one chapter or passage. You want rewrites, line edits, titles or blurbs. Your book is fiction. Or you would rather talk the draft through than read a report.

Do not expect better feedback than a chatbot gives: the report runs on models from the same companies. What differs is that you do not have to know what to ask, the whole book is read at once, and the numbers are calculated rather than estimated. The report arrives at a private link, so you can pass it to a co-author, an editor or a beta reader. Can AI really edit a book? shows what one report found, and missed, on a 70,000-word manuscript.

FAQ

What is the best AI book editor?

It depends on the edit. For grammar, Grammarly or ProWritingAid; for a novel's structure, Marlowe; for a non-fiction book's structure, Manuscript AI, which is ours. For questions, rewrites and titles, ChatGPT or Claude.

Can AI edit a whole manuscript at once?

Some can. ProWritingAid's Manuscript Analysis takes up to 300,000 words a run, Marlowe has no maximum, and Manuscript AI takes a Word file up to 16 MB. ChatGPT Plus and Claude's paid plans have windows big enough for an 80,000-word book by token count; ChatGPT's free tier and Grammarly's single check do not.

Does Amazon allow AI-edited books?

Yes. Amazon's KDP guidelines call AI edits to text you wrote "AI-assisted" and say you do not need to disclose them. Only text, images or translations created by AI must be declared when you publish.

Is Marlowe good for non-fiction?

The Marlowe AI editor, from Authors A.I., is built for fiction. Its makers say it can read non-fiction, but that its "real expertise and experience is primarily with fiction", and its reports center on plot, pacing and characters. It may help a narrative memoir; for a prescriptive self-help or business book, a tool built for non-fiction fits better.

How fast is an AI manuscript review?

An AI manuscript review takes minutes. Manuscript AI's report usually arrives in under 10 minutes and is guaranteed within 2 hours; Marlowe Pro takes about 10 minutes, by Authors A.I.'s account. A human editor sets their own turnaround, often several weeks, so ask for it in the quote.
