Atmosphere Press pricing: packages and what they cost

Atmosphere Press, sometimes searched as Atmosphere Publishing, publishes three package prices, each paid in three equal installments (checked 19 October 2026). The figures below come from its packages page and clause 8 of its contract.

PackagePriceIncludes
Essential$7,200 (3 × $2,400)Two editorial meetings and proofreading, custom cover and interior, print and ebook distribution with an ISBN, a marketing plan, three consultation calls
Flagship$14,700 (3 × $4,900)Essential, plus a Kirkus or BookLife review and one more review, a NetGalley listing, two award nominations, paid ads (50,000 impressions), a hardcover and 20 paperbacks
Enterprise (invite-only)$29,700 (3 × $9,900)Flagship, plus an author website, an audiobook, social media management, a book trailer, paid ads (250,000 impressions), maps or an index and 50 paperbacks

Payments follow milestones: editing starts after the first third, interior design after the second, printing after the last. Atmosphere says half its authors choose Essential, 40% Flagship and 10% Enterprise. Its FAQ says: "There are zero mandatory or hidden costs beyond what is listed above."

The contract does list charges outside the package. Author copies cost $8–16 each in batches of 50 or more (clause 12). Minor changes after the book goes to the printer cost $600 (clause 13). A late installment adds $100 every 60 days (clause 19).

Prices rise each year: "Our prices usually increase about ten percent per year, with new pricing going into effect every April." The newest archived copy (22 January 2026) shows four packages at $2,100–9,100 per installment. A fresh snapshot could not be saved on 19 October 2026. Atmosphere Press contract: rights, royalties and how to leave

Atmosphere publishes its full contract, 35 clauses, as page images dated June 2026. Clause 1 says: "Author retains all rights to the Book, including rights to any derivative work". Clause 2 grants "the exclusive right to print, publish, and sell the Book in print and digital form in the English language throughout the world."

Leaving is simple on paper. Clause 22: "Either Publisher or Author may terminate this Agreement at any time." If you leave before the proof copy is printed, you are "eligible for a $200.00 refund of fees already paid"; after that, "no refund is due." The same clause says the author "retains all rights in and files for the Book."

Clause 11 sets royalties: "The Publisher will receive 10% royalties on sales of the Book; 90% of sales proceeds will go to the Author". Payments are quarterly, by PayPal, once they exceed $100. The contract does not define "sales proceeds", so it does not say what comes off a sale before the 90% split.

Other terms worth reading:

  • Clause 21: the book stays "in print indefinitely" as print on demand, and "Author has final say over pricing".
  • Clause 18: production takes "at least six (6) months", then three more to publish, as "good-faith expectations, not guarantees".
  • Clause 23: if the book stalls for 24 months through the author's delay, Atmosphere may close the project without refund or charge a 10% reactivation fee.
  • Clauses 33–34: disputes go to mediation, then binding arbitration in Austin, and the losing side pays the other's legal fees.

What you get from Atmosphere Press, and what you do not

Every package buys a finished, distributed book under the Atmosphere name. Its FAQ says "it says Atmosphere on the spine of every book we publish", and clause 9 says it buys and registers the ISBNs. You approve the cover, interior and final text (clause 6).

The editing is big-picture feedback plus a proofread. Clause 9 promises "Two rounds of developmental editorial evaluation" delivered as written commentary and a phone call, then proofreading. Flagship and Enterprise add a "Cold Read". No package names a copyedit or line edit, the work of the person who checks every comma.

Promotion scales with the price. Essential gets a marketing plan, three calls and a database of 1,000+ bookstores to contact yourself. Reviews, awards, ads and a hardcover start at Flagship.

Doing it yourself costs less. An editorial assessment of an 80,000-word book costs $1,200–2,000 at EFA and Reedsy rates, a proofread $1,600–2,400 at EFA rates, and a Bowker ISBN $125. KDP charges $0 to publish.

Atmosphere Press reviews and complaints: what authors report

Atmosphere has an A+ BBB rating, one complaint in three years and no customer reviews there (checked 19 October 2026). The BBB profile states the LLC "is NOT a BBB Accredited Business"; Atmosphere's about page calls it "an A+ Accredited Business". BBB lists the business as started in September 2018. BBB says "Customer reviews are not used in the letter-grade calculation."

On Trustpilot, Atmosphere scores 4.8 from 235 reviews: 203 five-star and 11 one-star. It claimed the profile in August 2024 and pays for a Trustpilot subscription.

  • "The team there is responsive, professional, and has the author's best interest at heart." (a Trustpilot reviewer, October 2026)
  • "I never sent them a manuscript at all. Only a synopsis." (a Trustpilot reviewer, June 2024, on two acceptance emails)

Atmosphere replied to that review: "It looks like there was a mistake in the wording of our email." Other low reviews concern marketing results and design errors; the company answers most of them.

The Alliance of Independent Authors lists Atmosphere as "Pending", with no concerns noted. We found no Writer Beware post about it, and no Atmosphere Press lawsuit on CourtListener.

Reddit threads are what individual authors reported:

What to check before you pay Atmosphere Press

  1. Ask what "sales proceeds" means in clause 11, and ask for a worked example of your royalty on one paperback sold on Amazon.
  2. Ask how many submissions Atmosphere declined last year; it publishes no acceptance rate.
  3. Time your payments to the refund rule: leaving before the proof copy returns $200, and leaving after it returns nothing.
  4. Ask whether the "developmental editorial evaluation" includes edits in the manuscript or only written notes, and price a copyedit separately if you need one ($2,400–3,200 for 80,000 words at EFA rates).
  5. Ask whose name the ISBN record carries and what happens to it if you end the contract and republish elsewhere.

Alternatives to Atmosphere Press for the same budget

  • She Writes Press charges $12,000 all-in for 2026, publishes its vetting process and pays 60% of net on print; printing is extra.
  • Dorrance Publishing handles every step with one US team but publishes no prices or contract.
  • Palmetto Publishing starts "around $1,598" and prices services separately.
  • Amazon KDP plus freelancers: an editorial assessment, a proofread and an ISBN come to about $2,900–4,500 before a cover, and you keep every right.
