A sharper brief for your editor
If you still want an editor, you can hire for the problems the report names, and compare every quote against the same list.
As a self-publisher, I ran each paragraph through ChatGPT (I couldn't and won't pay 1000s to have my manuscript stripped of my voice, cadence, etc.), however, the service you offered was more broad and thematic (which is what I was looking for).”

From a real report
“Chapter VIII on movement is the clearest rupture. After the narrative warmth of Ogimi and the diet chapter, it becomes a catalogue of yoga types, tai chi styles, qigong’s ‘Tyau Shenn’ and step-by-step postures, and the Six Healing Sounds. The tie to ikigai is thin, and the chapter’s own admission, ‘It might feel confusing to be presented with all the Eastern traditions,’ confirms the overload.”
“Improvement: Open each chapter with a one-sentence bridge stating its link to ikigai…”
Who it's for
Reedsy suits authors who've decided to hire a person and want help finding the right one. You describe your book, request quotes from up to five professionals, and choose on portfolio and price.[3]
Reedsy says it has accepted about 3% of the professionals who applied, which saves you vetting editors yourself.[7]
Price
Each editor sets their own fee. Reedsy publishes averages from its marketplace: developmental editing runs 2.6–5.3¢ per word across genres, averaging 3.6¢. For business and self-help books the 2025 average was 4.4¢, and for biography and memoir 3.8¢.[1][8]
An editorial assessment, a feedback letter without edits in the manuscript, costs about 2.5¢ per word.[9]
Reedsy charges you a 10% commission on top of the editor's fee. Its terms give the example of a £1,000 fee costing the author £1,100. The rate falls slightly once you've spent more than $5,000 with the same professional.[2][10]
Turnaround
What you get
Reedsy is a marketplace, so what you get depends on the service you book. An editorial assessment is a feedback letter on the big picture with no direct edits. A developmental edit adds a detailed report and your manuscript with tracked comments and edits.[5]
Payments run through Reedsy, and its Project Protection covers disputes as long as you keep communication and payment on the platform.[11]
Reedsy also offers free tools, including Reedsy Studio for writing and formatting your book.[12]

Non-fiction fit
Reedsy lists developmental editors for self-help, business, and biography and memoir, and its developmental editing guide speaks to non-fiction authors directly.[6][8]
Non-fiction costs more there than fiction: Reedsy's 2025 average for business and self-help (4.4¢ per word) is well above romance (2.9¢).[1]
Manuscript AI: Built only for non-fiction: self-help, business, memoir, biography and research-based books. It doesn't analyze fiction.
Using both
Run Manuscript AI before you request quotes. The report gives you a clear brief, the chapters and structural issues you want the editor to focus on, and a cleaner draft can shrink the scope you need to buy.
Reedsy's own view is that AI can't replace a human developmental editor; its guide says "AI can't assess the emotional resonance of a manuscript." We agree. The report is a first pass, not the last word.[8]
When to choose Reedsy instead
- You've decided you want a human editor and want to compare several before choosing.
- You want the vetting, written quote and payment protection a marketplace provides.
- You also need copyediting, proofreading, a book coach or a query-letter review. Reedsy lists all of these.[5]
- You write fiction. Manuscript AI only analyzes non-fiction.
What Manuscript AI doesn't do
- It doesn't analyze fiction.
- It doesn't edit your text: there are no tracked changes or line edits in your manuscript.
- It doesn't check facts or verify your citations.
- It's an AI report, not a human editor's judgment, and there's no follow-up call.
- It accepts Word documents (.docx) up to 16 MB only.
Questions
Is Reedsy worth it for non-fiction?
If you want a human editor, it's a sensible place to find one. Reedsy lists developmental editors for self-help, business and memoir, says it accepts about 3% of applicants, and protects payments. Expect around 4.4¢ per word for a business or self-help developmental edit plus a 10% client fee: about $2,904 for a 60,000-word book.
How much does Reedsy charge authors?
Reedsy adds a 10% commission to the editor's fee, paid by the author, and takes another 10% from the editor. The commission falls to 9%, 8% and 7% as your total spend with the same professional passes $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000.
How long does an edit through Reedsy take?
Editors usually respond to quote requests within two business days, but Reedsy doesn't publish standard edit times and warns that editors book up months ahead. Agree start and end dates in your quote.
Does Reedsy use my manuscript to train AI?
Reedsy's terms say it won't use your content to train AI models. Manuscript AI doesn't train on manuscripts either. Your uploaded manuscript file is deleted automatically within 48 hours of your report being delivered, or within 48 hours of upload if you don't check out. We don't keep a copy of your manuscript text. Your report stays at your private link until you ask us to delete it.
