An editorial assessment is an editor's report on your whole manuscript: what works, what does not and what to fix first, with no changes to the text. EFA members report a median of $600 per assessment; for an 80,000-word book, per-word rates come to $1,200–2,000. Turnaround is set by each editor. A real example follows.
This page is about books. Academic journals use "manuscript assessment" for the desk review of a paper, which is a different service.
What is editorial assessment?
An editorial assessment is a written diagnosis of a finished draft. The editor reads every chapter, then writes a letter on the argument, structure, pacing and audience, with next steps. Reedsy says there is "no direct editing or annotation of the manuscript." It sits between a beta read and a developmental edit in depth and in price. The Australian Society of Authors says its assessments suit a manuscript "in the final stages of development" that "has already been through several drafts."
The same service goes by four other names: manuscript assessment, manuscript evaluation, manuscript critique and book critique. The editorial assessment meaning is the same in the US and near-identical in the UK and Australia, covered below. The Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA) lists it on its rate chart as "Manuscript Assessment/Evaluation."
| Editorial assessment | Developmental edit | Beta read | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you get | A letter on the whole book, problems ranked | A letter plus notes and suggested changes in the manuscript | A reader's reactions, often answers to your questions |
| Who writes it | An editor | An editor | A reader in your audience |
| Changes to your text | None | Comments and tracked changes | None |
| Cost, 80,000 words | $1,200–1,440 (EFA), $2,000 (Reedsy average) | $3,200–4,000 (EFA) | Median $150 per project (EFA) |
For a non-fiction book, a useful assessment answers six questions: is the promise clear, does the argument build, are the chapters in the right order, where is the evidence thin, what repeats, and who is the reader. Types of editing shows where it fits among the four edits, and what a developmental edit costs covers the next step up. Both sit inside the wider bill for publishing a book.
Editorial assessment example
Below is one page of an assessment, from a Manuscript AI sample report on The Pilgrim's Progress. The edition analyzed opens with a biography of Bunyan by John Piper, and chapter 2 is that biography. Read it as a book critique example: one problem, why it matters, and how to fix it.
Example from a Manuscript AI sample report (The Pilgrim's Progress), chapter 2, "To Live Upon God Who Is Invisible: The Life of John Bunyan": 4,404 words, 20 minutes to read, reading ease "Standard", grade level 9.98. Its first recommendation is headed "Writing style and flow: Fix the broken signposting and the unfinished structural promise."
The issue: The text promises "five observations" ("I would answer that with five observations"), but it delivers only two, and the second … is introduced awkwardly after a digression about the Puritans and "our chipper age." …
Why it matters: A reader told to expect five effects feels the argument stop partway. …
How to implement: Either supply observations three through five or change the promise to "two observations." Number each effect with a bold label and a one-sentence thesis.
A human editor's assessment covers the same ground as a letter in prose. Cornerstones, a UK consultancy, describes its report as "approx. 8-10 pages" with a follow-up call. The Manuscript AI report is structured instead: answers to eight editorial questions about the whole book, then a summary, recommendations, word count, reading time and readability for every chapter. More full reports are in the sample analyses.
What a manuscript assessment costs
A manuscript assessment costs 1.5–1.8¢ a word at the EFA's 2026 median rates, or $1,200–1,440 for an 80,000-word book. A Reedsy editorial assessment averages 2.5¢ a word, or $2,000. EFA members report a median of $600 per assessment across all lengths. Turnaround is set by each editor; ask for it in the quote.
Any manuscript evaluation service prices by length, so the $600 median reflects many shorter manuscripts. Some sell a partial read for less: The Literary Consultancy assesses the first 15,000 words for £350 and the first 30,000 for £500, which suits a book that loses its way early. Reedsy says a developmental edit "will typically cost 30% more than an assessment letter." At the EFA's rates the gap is wider: $3,200–4,000 for the developmental edit of the same 80,000 words, nearly three times as much.
| Option | Cost, 80,000 words | Time | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Human editorial assessment | $1,200–1,440 (EFA); $2,000 (Reedsy average) | Set by each editor | A letter on the whole book | EFA, Reedsy |
| Developmental edit | $3,200–4,000 (EFA); $2,080–4,240 (Reedsy) | Three to six weeks for most books | A letter plus notes in the manuscript | EFA, The Editorial Department |
| Manuscript AI report | $19 | Usually under 10 minutes, guaranteed within 2 hours | Eight editorial questions, plus a summary, recommendations and metrics per chapter | Sample report |

Manuscript assessment: UK and Australian services
In the UK and Australia, "manuscript assessment" is the everyday name for an editorial assessment. Literary consultancies and writers' societies publish fixed prices for it. For an 80,000-word manuscript, The Literary Consultancy charges £810 and the Australian Society of Authors A$1,469–1,852, depending on membership and word band.
| Service | Price for 80,000 words | Report | Turnaround stated | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Literary Consultancy (UK) | £810: £650 up to 60,000 words, plus £8 per extra 1,000; VAT included for UK residents | Written report by PDF; fiction and non-fiction | 4–6 weeks | TLC fees |
| Cornerstones (UK), Developmental Edit | £1,120–1,440 at £14–18 per 1,000 words, by editor tier | "approx. 8-10 pages" plus a follow-up call | 6 weeks | Cornerstones |
| Australian Society of Authors | A$1,469–1,729 for 70,000–80,000 words; A$1,592–1,852 for 80,000–90,000 (member and non-member) | Written report on strengths, weaknesses and market potential | 4–6 weeks | ASA pricing |
Cornerstones sells no product called an assessment. Its Developmental Edit is the nearest match, "akin to a reader's report or editorial letter," and its pages are written for novelists. The ASA is plain about the limits: its assessment "is not a structural edit or copy edit," and it includes no follow-up questions to the assessor. TLC adds a fair warning of its own: no consultancy should be "insisting that a manuscript assessment is an essential step."
How to use an assessment: from notes to a revision plan
An assessment is worth its fee only if it becomes a revision plan. Read the letter twice, a day apart, then sort every note by size and fix the biggest first. These five steps turn a letter into a dated plan.
- Read it twice, a day apart, before you change anything.
- List every note in a table: the note, the chapter, its size (book, chapter or sentence), your decision (accept, adapt or reject) and why.
- Fix the book-level notes first: chapters to move, merge or cut.
- Then the chapter notes: openings, endings, cases, thin evidence.
- Set a date for each pass, and decide who reads the revision: beta readers, a second assessment, or a developmental editor.
You will not agree with every note. Reject a note only when you can say in one sentence why the book is better without the change; if you cannot, the note probably stands.
Is my book ready to publish? has the checks to run on the revised draft.
FAQ
What does an editorial assessment include?
An editorial assessment includes a letter on the whole manuscript: what works, what does not, and what to revise first, usually by theme or by chapter. It includes no edits to your text. Some editors add a call; Cornerstones' Developmental Edit, the nearest UK equivalent, includes one.
How much does a manuscript assessment cost?
At the EFA's 2026 median rates, a manuscript assessment costs 1.5–1.8¢ a word, or $1,200–1,440 for 80,000 words. Reedsy's average of 2.5¢ a word comes to $2,000. EFA members report a median of $600 per assessment across all lengths, so a short manuscript costs less.
Should I get an assessment or a developmental edit first?
Get the assessment first if you are not sure what is wrong, or if you want to do the revision yourself. Go straight to a developmental edit if you already know the structure needs work and want help on the page. The assessment costs $1,200–1,440 for 80,000 words at EFA rates, against $3,200–4,000 for the developmental edit.
How long does a manuscript assessment take?
Each editor sets the turnaround, so ask for a date in the quote. The UK and Australian services that publish one say four to six weeks (TLC and the ASA) or six weeks (Cornerstones). A Manuscript AI report usually arrives in under 10 minutes.
Is an AI manuscript assessment any good?
It is good for a first diagnosis: it reads the whole manuscript in one run, answers the same questions for every book, and gives each chapter's word count and readability, for $19. It cannot fact-check, line-edit, talk through your goals or judge your market the way an experienced editor can. Use it to decide whether you need a human assessment, and what to ask that editor.
